The 82nd Texas Legislature opened on January 11, 2011, in Austin, Texas. Speaker of the House, Joe Strauss (R- San Antonio), was elected after a heated race and controversy over the fact that Strauss had garnered bipartisan support for the Speaker position despite a strong Republican majority.

2011 was the first time grassroots organizations could lobby and campaign for the Speaker position in the Texas House. Conservative groups, such as Empower Texans, pushed for conservative representatives such as Ken Paxton (R- McKinney and Warren Chisolm (R-Pampa). The concern was that Representative Strauss might name Democrats as committee and sub-committee heads.
